Andrew Ondrejcak x Zarif Design
Two robes, 2020.
A collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Ondrejcak and Kabul-based collective Zarif Design, with iconography by Astor Fowler (age 5) facilitated by the Ethical Fashion Initiative. Inspired by the traditional Afghan coat called “Chapan,” this work was hand-embroidered and tailored by the Zarif Design team in Kabul, Afghanistan based on a child's sketch.
Zarif Design, founded by Zolaykha Sherzad, is a social enterprise based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Zarif brings two decades of experience empowering Afghan artisans and women with dignity and economic sustainability through its work reviving the ancient traditions and skills of weaving, embroidery, and tailoring. Zarif aims to build peace and personal transformation through creative practices, and has achieved this in its workshops by providing a safe environment for women and men to work, side by side.
